2,000 Malindo employees sign off today with farewell wishes on social media

Malindo staff members are reminiscing on social media as the beleaguered airline retrenches nearly two-thirds of its work force due to the Covid-19 pandemic. – EPA pic, October 31, 2020.

A THREE-MONTH salary package is among the severance package for some 2,000 Malindo Airways Sdn Bhd employees whose stint comes to end today (October 31), as the airline embarks on a retrenchment exercise to stay afloat.

Their terminations come into effect tomorrow.

The company’s retrenchment policy and guidelines sighted by The Malaysian Insight revealed that the retrenchment package will be paid out in instalments.

“Staff who will receive total gross retrenchment severance amount of RM15,000.00 and below, the payment will be made in three instalments. The first instalment payment will be on November 30.

“Staff who will receive total gross retrenchment severance amount of RM15,001.00 and above, the payment will be made in six instalments, with the first payment on November 30.

Employees were chosen on a last in first out basis.

Staff with a basic salary of  RM2,000 and below, with years of service of more than one year and below two years, will be entitled to three months salary, termination layoff benefits (TLOB) as well as the balance pro-rated annual leave.

As for those with a basic salary of RM2,000 and below, and have served more than two years and below five years, they will get one month basic salary, TLOB and balance pro-rated annual leaves.

Those with a salary of above RM2,001.00 and have completed one year service will be entitled to a month’s basic salary.

Staff who have served the company for four years and have a salary of above RM2,001 will be given three months basic salary.

Malindo became the most trending topic on Twitter as staff took to social media to “sign off” from the company while words of support poured in from social media users.

“Has (have) been serving in malindo air for 2 years… many bittersweet memories, made a lot mistakes while learning new things but all of this for my experience… and thank you to all my seniors and friends for the guidance… wish u all the best n gud luck… signing off M08568,” @syafiqfitri tweeted.

“Pray for all aviation industry, Thanks Malindo. Cabin crew, disarm all doors and cross check. Signed off,” read another tweet from Natrah Zainal.

Anthony Frank thanked comrades before signing off.

“Today marks my last day with Malindo. Would like to thank you for all the guidance, teaching and support that you have given throughout this wonderful journey. Hope we can work together in the coming future (if lucky). Thank you once again. Signing off. Anthony Frank.” 

Meanwhile, flight passengers also took the opportunity to share their fond memories of the airline.

“Malindo close to my heart as I commuted to Kerteh every Monday morning and came back to Subang every Thursday afternoon for six months last year #malindo #memories,” tweeted @a7ahari.

The Malaysian Insight reported recently that Malindo will be cutting about 2,000 jobs from its workforce of 3,200 in a retrenchment exercise as Covid-19 takes a major hit on revenue.

Chief executive officer Capt Mushafiz Mustafa Bakri said in an internal memo sighted by The Malaysian Insight that the airline is only making 10% of its pre-pandemic monthly revenue while its fleet has been halved. – October 31, 2020.
