PRIME Minister Najib Razak today led thousands of Umno members in the party’s protest against the proposal to make Jerusalem – a city holy to three major faiths – the capital of Israel.
“We fiercely protest the proposal to make Jerusalem the capital of Israel,” said Najib, who asked thousands of the party’s leaders and members to stand and read out the protest.
He said Muslims the world over were shocked by the proposal by the administration of US President Donald Trump to recognise Jerusalem as the Israeli capital.
East Jerusalem is being claimed as the capital of a future Palestinian state, as part of a solution to the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The US, along with the UK and European Union, are all brokers in talks to end the conflict.
Malaysia does not recognise Israel and is among the countries that firmly back the Palestinian authority.
Trump yesterday announced the US’ recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, calling it “the beginning of a new approach to the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians”.
He also ordered the US State Department to start making preparations to relocate the US embassy from Tel Aviv.
Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry earlier today said the US move was bound to inflame sentiments and complicate the fight against terror.
Wisma Putra said Trump’s decision would put an end to all efforts made to achieve peace in the Middle East, which centred on the Palestinian question. – December 7, 2017.
