PKR, DAP and Amanah are not in favour of fresh elections as they would only be a waste of money, said Khalid Abdul Samad.

The Amanah leader said a meeting tonight of the Pakatan Harapan presidential council did not bother discussing the matter.

“We didn’t discuss it. Why would we want to waste money on fresh polls when we can get a clear majority?” he said after the meeting at the PKR headquarters in Petaling Jaya.

He was responding to reports that Umno and PAS MPs told the Yang di-Pertuan Agong that they want fresh elections called.

The king this afternoon held individual interviews with 90 parliamentarians as part of the process to determine a new government.

The MPs were asked to state their choice of candidate for prime minister, or if Parliament should be dissolved.

The PH presidential council did not hold a press conference after the meeting, which lasted more than two hours, ended.

Leaders including PKR’s Anwar Ibrahim and Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, DAP’s Lim Guan Eng, Lim Kit Siang and Gobind Singh Deo, and Amanah’s Mohamad Sabu all left without speaking to reporters.

Amanah deputy president Salahuddin Ayub said an announcement will be made tomorrow.

“We discussed with the three parties left in PH, and we arrived at a consensus.

“The decision will be made known tomorrow.”

Asked if there is a collective agreement on who to support for the prime minister’s post, he said: “PM candidate? Tomorrow.”

DAP and Amanah have separately declared their backing for Dr Mahathir Mohamad as prime minister.

  • Calling for fresh polls because it is their last attempt...especially desperate for those who want to avoid jail. They don't have the numbers to form a backside government as claimed earlier.
