THE people have never come first for Umno or PAS, lawyer Ambiga Sreenevasan said of the Opposition parties’ calls for fresh elections.

“Umno and PAS asking for dissolution? The last thing we need to burden our economy with is an election.

“They don’t change. People have never come first for them,” she tweeted.

The president of the Malaysian Bar and human rights activist was reacting to a press conference by Umno secretary-general Annuar Musa this evening, where he said the MPs from both parties had told Yang Di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah they preferred fresh elections to resolve the current political crisis, following the collapse of the Pakatan Harapan government.

“We asked the Agong for his consent for Parliament to be dissolved,” said Annuar.

“In the current situation, the mandate should be returned to the people, and we asked that Parliament be dissolved so that the people can vote.”

This afternoon, 90 of the country’s 222 MPs were summoned for interviews with the king as he decides whether to ask a lawmaker to become prime minister or send the nation back to the ballot box.

The remainder of the MPs will have an audience with the king tomorrow.

Kuala Krau MP Ismail Mohamed Said earlier said the parliamentarians interviewed were asked to either name a prime minister candidate or state their preference for fresh elections. – February 25, 2020.

If he was successful in forming a Perikatan Nasional aka back door govt, then it'll be to hell with the people's mandate....

  • Last attempt after they failed to form a backside government. Desperate for those whose cases will be decided soon. Jail or otherwise

  • At least after this unnecessary drama, the government should fast track all criminal cases and ensure that justice is served.
