PAS will be discussing its proposal to move for a vote of confidence in Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad with Umno tomorrow, Malaysiakini reported.
The Islamist party’s deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the discussion will take place at the Muakafat Nasional consultative committee meeting to be held at 8pm tomorrow at the Putra World Trade Centre.
Speaking at a press conference after the 2020 National Welfare Convention at the Tun Hussein Onn Town Hall today, Tuan Ibrahim said a vote of confidence should be put through in Parliament due to the political instability caused by the agreement to hand over the post of prime minister to Anwar Ibrahim.
Tuan Ibrahim said the proposal was private, could be taken by any MP and it was up to the House to accept or reject it.
“As Dr Mahathir himself says, parliamentarians decide whether he should continue or he should resign,” he said.
In an interview with The Malaya Post portal yesterday Dr Mahathir said, while he would keep his promise to hand over his duties to Anwar, the final decision would have to be made in Parliament.
He added, even if a candidate comes from a party that enjoys a majority but he himself cannot command majority support, then the candidate won’t be able to become prime minister.
However, Tuan Ibrahim declined to answer whether PAS will go ahead with the motion if Umno was not on board. – February 9, 2020.
