UMNO Supreme Council member Lokman Noor Adam has lashed out at Umno president, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi for admitting that the party needs to work with Dr Mahathir Mohamad for political survival.
Lokman, a staunch critic of Dr Mahathir, said he was embarrassed to have Zahid as his president whom he branded “spineless”.
“Zahid said because PAS has decided to cooperate with Mahathir, Umno has to follow suit; this to me is a total embarrassment for Umno. I am ashamed to have a spineless leader like Zahid,” Lokman said in a statement today.
“It does not make sense for Umno to follow PAS… to support a dictator and abandon our former president (Najib Razak) who is currently being victimised by Mahathir.”
The former Anwar Ibrahim supporter continued to slam Zahid, accusing the Umno president of misusing Najib’s name to justify his backing Dr Mahathir.
“Zahid previously used Abdul Hadi Awang’s name to justify his action in dealing with Dr Mahathir; now he is using Najib’s name by saying that only way to save Najib is to support Dr Mahathir.”
“What Zahid didn’t tell us was that he met Dr Mahathir to reduce the corruption charges he was facing and to save himself from the 20-year jail term,” Lokman said.
Zahid in a speech at the Umno Muafakat Nasional event chaired by Tajuddin Abdul Rahman today stated four reasons why the Malay nationalist party had to support Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s leadership.
In an audio recording shared on Whatsapp, Zahid said Umno must follow PAS’ footsteps in deciding to work with Dr Mahathir.
Zahid went on to say that Umno could not help Najib, who is facing multiple corruption charges, if the party did not support the prime minister.
Zahid said Dr Mahathir had the power to ban Umno and therefore, the party must not defy him.
Finally, Zahid told the meeting that as the president, he has the power to decide whether or not the party should cooperate with Dr Mahathir. However, Zahid said he would leave the decision to the party’s select committee division. – February 3, 2020.
