THE Education Ministry is reviewing some 800 contracts awarded for canteen, cleaning and security services in schools nationwide after discovering possible fraud during the tender process.
Sources told The Malaysian Insight more than 140 contracts were revoked after a special task force found elements of fraud, where the contractors had allegedly provided false bank statements.
These were contracts awarded from January this year.
Sources also said ministry officials who approved these contracts are also going to be hauled up before these cases are referred to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
The MACC and the Finance Ministry will also be roped in for further action, the source added.
The Malaysian Insight was made to understand that the cabinet had already been notified about the investigations into the contracts.
Contract termination notices have also been issued to several contractors, beginning July 31.
“Some of the contracts will expire in three or four years and this is why they are terminated instantly,” said the source.
A termination notice and the reason for the termination of contacts will be given to the contractors, who have 14 days to respond before the end of the notice.
The Education Ministry in the meantime will call for a new tender process following the procurement of contracts procedures.
The ministry is also in the process of appointing temporary contractors to replace companies that have had their contracts terminated. – August 13, 2019.
