MOHAMED Nazri Aziz, who is under fire for an allegedly racist speech, today said his statements were misrepresented and that the entire fiasco was the work of certain parties desperate to win the Semenyih by-election.
The Barisan Nasional secretary-general said the whole thing was Pakatan Harapan’s doing.
“Everyone knows me. I’m not an extremist. I’m a person who takes care of the rights of all races,” Nazri said, at an impromptu dialogue with youth in Semenyih.
“To those who know me, this is rubbish.”
He said pro-government media had misrepresented his statements at a ceramah in Semenyih, and used the opportunity to portray him as racist.
During his speech in Beranang, Semenyih on Saturday, Nazri was reported to have accused the Pakatan Harapan government of being weak and surrendering the rights of the Malays to other races.
He criticised the government over the appointments of non-Malays as chief justice, attorney-general and finance minister.
In a subsequent press conference to clear up the issue, Nazri said he was only talking about issues that were already being discussed by the Malay grassroots.
“I have already met the police and given my statement… I have not been charged yet.
“It’s just an investigation. What comes after, that I don’t know,” he said tonight.
Bukit Aman is investigating Nazri for sedition in relation to his speech last week in the Semenyih by-election campaign.
Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said Nazri’s case is classified under Section 4(1) of the Sedition Act 1948.
Under the act, first-time offenders may be fined not more than RM5,000, jailed up to three years, or both. – February 26, 2019.
