PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang is evading the question of whether he gave his “blessing” for Nik Mohamad Abduh Nik Abdul Aziz to lie about the party receiving Umno funds, reported Malaysiakini.
The portal said Hadi was asked about the matter twice at an event in Kuala Terengganu yesterday.
“I didn’t watch the video (clip). I didn’t read (about it). Hence, I don’t want to comment,” he was quoted as saying in response to the first question.
“Let’s see if it is true or not. (I’ll have to) read (about) it first. There are a lot of things (going on) and I’m busy with other matters,” he said when pressed on the issue.
Asked whether he will listen to the recording in which Nik Abduh talks about PAS leaders getting money from their traditional foes, he said it depends on whether he has time to do so, citing his busy schedule.
“It depends on whether I have time. I have a lot of other work. I have no time to listen to things that happened in the past.”
On whether it is alright to lie to protect a fellow Muslim, Hadi said: “Of course. If a criminal came here to look for a victim, would you (point out) the victim?
“We would be compelled to lie to save the person… There are times (where lying is permissible).”
Nik Abduh made a bombshell revelation this week, saying he had wanted to come clean about the controversial recording, but was told to “deny everything” by party leaders, including Hadi.
He said he obeyed Hadi, who had given his blessing to issue a denial immediately.
In the recording, which made the rounds shortly before the 14th general election, Nik Abduh is heard saying PAS had taken money from Umno.
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission is investigating claims that the Islamist party received RM90 million in 1Malaysia Development Bhd funds from the Barisan Nasional lynchpin in exchange for support for the then ruling pact.
Nine PAS leaders are at the centre of the probe, with statements recorded from Nik Abduh, who is the party’s central committee member, and former deputy president Nasharudin Mat Isa.
MACC launched an investigation after it was forwarded a police report on the matter, following Hadi’s move to settle a suit against Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown over a 2016 article that alleged the transfer of funds to PAS. – February 16, 2019.
