At least he is no rapist or thief, says Bersatu in defence of Marzuki

DEPUTY Foreign Minister Marzuki Yahya might have faked his university credentials, but never committed rape or theft, said his Bersatu colleagues.

The Star reported supreme council member Tariq Ismail as saying people should judge Marzuki on his dedication and character, not his varsity degree.

“(Given) his humility and hard work, I’d hire the one from fake Cambridge. (Those from) the real Cambridge, I’d throw them into the river because they think they own the world and the world has to continuously chase them.

“He’s not going to be CEO of Goldman Sachs, BP or Felda, or resuscitate Enron. All those people who headed those companies had degrees, but were crooks who stole.

“A degree is just a piece of paper that gets you into the workplace. The rest is up to you.

“Having a dubious degree, or not having graduated, can be a stigma, but as long as people don’t rape or steal, it is fine.”

Deputy president Mukhriz Mahathir said Marzuki was not chosen to be a cabinet member due to his education qualifications.

“As far as I know, he never declared that he is a Cambridge University graduate. That only came out in Wikipedia,” he was quoted as saying.

“For his own knowledge, he participated in a course by an American online institution, which unfortunately has a similar name.

“I’m sure he was not picked to be a deputy minister on the supposed merit of his brandishing a Cambridge University degree.”

Marzuki, who previously said he had a degree from the UK’s Cambridge University via a distance learning programme, yesterday admitted that it was actually from the US’ Cambridge International University.

The American institution has since come under scrutiny, with increased suspicion that it is a “diploma mill” awarding degrees with little to no actual study involved.

Cambridge International University, on its website, admitted that it is not accredited.

The site said the varsity offers 150 programmes, but only 12 faculty members and 13 adjunct faculty members are listed. – February 7, 2019.

  • Boasting about a 'fake degree' and being caught red-handed should be enough to be dropped as a deputy Minister.. It is like having been caught with 'fake currency' regardless of amount. Will PDRM forgive a fake currency offence?

  • Why must anyone say lies about their education u have u have u dont have u dont have to be successful it is u. Many and l say many most successful people dont even have High School is that a problem that u cant live with then it never too late to take your degree masters or PhD. No big deal if you dont even have a degree just dont lie.

  • Would you then suggest the same be applied to professionals such as doctors, engineers, lawyers, accountants and such? The moral integrity Is important because their conduct and practice will be affected by such values.

    To say a humble and hardworking deceiver or liar is forgivable is indeed laughable. How can you trust the words coming from one with such weak values? Would you trust any unreliable person by entrusting your loved ones to their care? If you would not, why risk your country then?
