A FORMER top official at Tourism Malaysia and an official from a private company were brought to the Putrajaya magistrates’ court this morning for remand application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.
The duo are being investigated over a RM100 million tourism contract awarded in one day prior to the 14th general election.
Clad in the MACC detainee’s orange garb, the two were brought to the court at 9am for the remand proceedings.
Both could not be identified as they had pulled their shirts over the head.
It was, however, earlier reported that the former official and another officer, said to be a woman from a private company, were arrested at MACC in Putrajaya after their statements were recorded yesterday.
According to sources, the two were detained on grounds of using one’s office or position for gratification.
The top official is a well-known businessman while the officer is a top administrator at a private firm.
The arrests were linked to investigations into a RM100 million contract allegedly approved on April 4, 2018. Critics said it was impossible to evaluate, negotiate and seal a deal worth RM99.693 million in one day.
Former Tourism Malaysia chairman Wee Choo Keong brought the matter to light on his blog on May 31.
He said the contract, which went to a local company to act as a go-between for Tourism Malaysia and a China-based firm to promote Malaysia on social media, was awarded in haste and without due diligence. – January 9, 2019.
