BARISAN Nasional chief Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has not once touched on any political alliance with DAP, says the coalition’s executive secretary, Ahmad Masrizal Muhammad.
Masrizal said that talk about a tie-up between BN and DAP circulating in social media stemmed from a series of closed-door meetings.
“The rumours followed a meeting between (Barisan Nasional secretary-general) Nazri Aziz and members of Umno’s divisions committee, which was exploited by those with vested interest to create an uproar.
“Zahid has never expressed any wish or entertained any attempts for BN to join hands with DAP at any stage,” Masrizal said.
“He is a long way from holding any political talks with DAP,” Masrizal said in a statement today.
It was reported that a faction in Umno was keen on forming a unity government with ruling parties PKR and DAP.
The plan, allegedly driven by Nazri Aziz, follows the exit of half of Umno’s Sabah leaders and members yesterday.
Nazri reportedly also conducted the meetings to rally support for Anwar Ibrahim as Malaysia’s 8th prime minister.
This was disclosed to The Malaysian Insight by five sources who attended the meetings with Nazri, which began last week.
The sources said that at the meetings, Nazri presented Zahid’s strategy to support Anwar and form a new government with PKR and DAP, sources said.
Masrizal, however, said it was highly unlikely that Zahid would want Umno to cooperate with DAP as its political ideologies differed greatly.
“He is a strong Malay and a strong Muslim. It is absolutely a serious accusation and overwhelmingly outrageous,” he said.
Masrizal also called on all parties to give Zahid the space he needed to preside over Umno until his mandate as president expires in 2021. – December 13, 2018.
