Massive street demonstrations have taken place since Myanmar’s military staged a coup on February 1 and detained civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi, ending a decade-long experiment with democracy.

A civil disobedience campaign has also since choked many government operations, as well as businesses and banks.

The generals justify the coup by claiming fraud in November’s elections, which Suu Kyi’s party won in a landslide. The junta has proclaimed a one-year state of emergency, and promises to hold fresh elections after that without offering a precise time frame.

Since the coup hundreds of protesters have been arrested and four have died after being shot. The putsch has drawn global condemnation. – February 25, 2021.
