[WATCH] Food prices shoot back up after Hari Raya respite

Afif Abd Halim

CONSUMERS on social media claimed that expanded price controls during the Hari Raya season caused prices of commonly consumed items such as
chicken, beef and certain vegetables to be lower than last year.

But after a month since the festival, prices for these groceries especially fish and chicken have gone back up. – July 21, 2019.

  • The joke among many house wives including mine is,'Whenever the government interferes with price control, the product prices will go up because the approved price is usually higher. The price of tomatoes, before price control, fell to as low as Rm2 per kilo. Now with the price control of RM3.50, a few supermarket fixed their price to RM3.40s. WHY? Let supply and demand control price. The prices of onions, garlic and potatoes are the best examples because these products have limited shelf life. Only the village grocer is foolish enough to maintain high prices because he has monopoly. Even beef and mutton too have found new sources to bring the price down. Do not be like Tabong Haj. One of their condition for travel agencies to organise Umrah trips in the past was the air fare should not be less than what TH charges. Isn't it a funny way of price control?
