GOBIND Singh Deo slammed blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin’s racist slur against national Commercial Crime Investigations Department chief Amar Singh Ishar Singh, calling it an attack on a multiracial and multireligious society.

The communications and multimedia minister said such comments underlined the need for laws against hate speech with an extraterritorial reach to prosecute offenders from overseas.

“This is an uncalled-for attack against Amar Singh and the Sikh community. It deserves nothing less than the highest degree of condemnation,” Gobind said in a statement today.

“It undermines the most basic values we Malaysians uphold, which is mutual respect for each other. We are a multiracial and multireligious society.

“We cannot and must not allow such attacks against any one of us to go unnoticed,” he added.

Raja Petra in his portal Malaysia Today stated Amar Singh’s “turban must be too tight that it is restricting the flow of blood to his brain” in the war of words over the alleged theft.

“This Amar Singh needs to remove his turban to clear his brain once in a while,” the reputedly pro-Najib UK-based blogger said.

Both Gobind and Amar are from the Sikh community. Both men are firsts of their community to hold their posts.

The CCID director is heading the police investigation of former prime minister Najib Razak and the 1Malaysia Development Bhd scandal.

Last Friday, Amar Singh told Raja Petra to lodge a police report for alleging RM43.3 million had been stolen by the police from the raids on Najib’s premises in May, calling it “baseless and simply ludicrous”.

Gobind said Raja Petra’s comment exemplified the need to have laws against hate speech.

“These laws must also focus on more effective and efficient extraterritorial reach to facilitate the prosecution of persons who commit such offences from overseas in Malaysia,” he said.

In July, Islamic Affairs Minister Mujahid Yusof Rawa said the government was considering a law to police remarks and actions intended to cause racial and religious offense. – September 30, 2018.

  • RPK has taken his pro-Najibism too low and too far. To insult the sikh community just because Najib is caught with his hand in the cookie jar is not only sensitive, it is outright seditious. Najib is a thief and a kleptocrat who tried to launder his money by claiming it was a donation from an Arab friend. Now he is trying to pass off his loot as UMNO's money but really what has this got to do with a tight turban constricting Amar Singh's blood flow?
