BARISAN Nasional will form 28 portfolio committees to monitor the government, said Umno secretary-general Annuar Musa.

“These committees, although not quite the same as the shadow cabinet practised in the Westminster system, will monitor each ministry,” Annuar said during a press conference at the Putra World Trade Centre today.

There will be two chairmen for each portfolio.

“They will appoint three more non-MPs, consisting of professionals or people with integrity.

“The first duty of these committees will be to come out with an alternative budget. This will be headed by Khairy Jamaluddin (Rembau MP),” said Annuar.

The Prime Minister’s Department committee will be headed by Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi (Bagan Datoh), Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah (Gua Musang) and vice-president Ismail Sabri (Bera).

Each committee will have two MPs.

Annuar said the decision was agreed to by BN component parties MCA, MIC and PBRS.
