FORMER Tabung Haji chairman Abdul Azeez Abdul Rahim has been brought to the Putrajaya magistrates’ court this morning for remand over anti-graft investigations.
Wearing orange lock-up clothing, the Umno Supreme Council member and Baling MP was presented in court after spending the night at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters in Putrajaya.
About 50 supporters, led by fellow Supreme Council member Lokman Noor Adam, greeted Azeez when he arrived.
Azeez and his brother, Latiff, were arrested yesterday at the MACC headquarters. Latiff arrived in court today shortly after him. Another person, said to be a cousin, was also brought to court today for remand.
In May, just after the new Pakatan Harapan government won federal power, the MACC raided at least three properties linked to Azeez – his homes in Subang Jaya and Baling, Kedah, as well as his office in Jalan Tun Razak, Kuala Lumpur.
A total of RM500,000 was seized, as well as at least 20 watches and almost RM1.2 million in foreign currencies from Bangladesh, the Maldives, Saudi Arabia and the United Kingdom.
Azeez had later said the money belonged to Umno Baling, which he had withdrawn for zakat payments ahead of the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations.
The Baling lawmaker also said that the watches were high-grade fakes.
Azeez was appointed to the Tabung Haji board in 2011 and became its chairman on July 1, 2013.
He tendered his resignation as Tabung Haji chairman on May 14 this year. – September 26, 2018.
