TO remain relevant, Umno must start taking into account the multiculturalism of Malaysia instead of only working to be the defender of the Malay race, said the party deputy president Mohamad Hasan.
In an interview with New Straits Times today, Mohamad said the Malay nationalist party must convey such a message to to all Malaysians.
“We can no longer stand with one race. Gone are the days when we could chant Hidup Melayu without reason.
“There needs to be a new picture for Umno, where we are still the guardians of Malay rights, Islam and the royal institution. But we also need to be defenders of the multicultural and multiracial society in Malaysia today,” he said, in the lead up to the party’s general assembly this weekend.
He said the old Umno rallying call to defend the religion and race was no longer palatable, especially to the younger people.
This was because “they cannot comprehend and did not go through Umno’s struggle back then”, the former Negri Sembilan menteri besar said.
He said party members must accept the reality that Umno was no longer the ruling party.
“We lost the election and now we have to focus on rebranding and rejuvenation. There are a lot of steps that we need to take, including changing our policies.
“Umno’s ideology is to fight for and uphold Malay rights, but is this sole ideology still relevant? The answer is no.”
Mohamad won the deputy president’s post in the party polls in July and is part of a new team working to revive Umno following its loss of power in GE14.
Describing Umno as an “old brand that needs to be polished”, Mohamad said the party needed to focus first on strengthening and empowering itself, before plotting out the strategies to win the next general election.
For the first, he said he had laid out a plan called “Umno 2030”.
“Meanwhile, there will also be a team to study, plan and strategise towards winning GE15,” he said. – September 26, 2018.
