THE chaotic PKR elections in Penang and Kedah over the weekend not only embarrassed the party but showed that there were members who did not understand democracy, says party vice-president Chua Tian Chang, better known as Tian Chua.

Others agreed, saying that technical errors in the e-voting system was no excuse for violence, and blamed negative campaigning for the scuffles. The fiasco resulted in the Kedah results being nullified.

Tian Chua, who is defending his post, also did not rule out sabotage, saying that some supporters had caused a commotion on purpose.

“I hope the police will investigate. This should not happen. These people do not know how to look after themselves.

“If there were problems with the e-voting system, it is still not a reason to cause a commotion.

“This is very embarrassing. It shows that certain people do not understand the meaning of democracy. Democracy is not just about grabbing posts,” Chua told The Malaysian Insight.

“I blame certain candidates who, before the election, incited supporters with provocative and defamatory words,” he added.

Last Sunday, police detained four men during the PKR polls at the Merbok branch in Sungai Petani, Kedah.

In Penang, a chair was thrown during the fracas.

PKR president-elect Anwar Ibrahim has said that those who cause trouble, similar to what happened in Penang and Kedah, will be sacked from the party.

“Those who created trouble yesterday, they probably think this is MIC. MIC is famous for throwing chairs.

“If they love throwing chairs, I will make sure they will be thrown out of the party,” he said on Monday.

Meanwhile, Central Leadership Council candidate Yusmadi Yusoff urged the Central Election Committee to take decisive action against those who caused the commotion.

He also advised candidates not to make statements that could raise tensions.

“Leaders need to lead. A good leader sets a good example before being chosen,” he said. – September 25, 2018.
