SYED Ali Al-Habshee is the latest to quit Umno, dealing it with another blow as its annual general assembly rolls around.

The Cheras Umno division leader, though not an MP, is widely seen as an influential warlord and opinion-shaper among its grassroots.

“I would like to officially announce that I have decided with a heavy heart to quit Umno,” he said in an emotional speech today.

Two years ago Syed Ali and his Cheras division came under the spotlight when former Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin questioned Prime Minister Najib Razak’s handling of the financially-troubled state investment fund 1 Malaysia Development Berhad during a closing speech at the Cheras Umno’s division meeting.

Two days later, Muhyiddin was sacked as deputy Prime Minister and subsequently as a party member. He went on to help found Bersatu.

Syed Ali, a two term senator did not say where he was headed but based on his past ties it would not be a surprise if he linked up with one of the Pakatan Harapan component parties.

Last Saturday, Syed Ali created a stir when he appeared at the Amanah’s anniversary celebrations in Temerloh, Pahang. – September 24, 2018.
