PKR deputy president hopeful Rafizi Ramli has warned that there are those set on creating trouble if their chosen candidates lose in the party elections.
“When he feels he’s going to lose, someone will start the provocation for him. They get angry and protest. Candidates who think they might lose surely have instigators.
“I will inform (incoming president) Anwar Ibrahim, and will ask for police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission’s help.
“There are those willing to harm others, and we want police to put them in the lock-up,” he said at a 20 Years of Reformasi meeting in Kuala Lumpur last night.
The first day of the PKR polls, which kicked off in Kedah and Penang, ended in chaos due to issues with the e-voting system, used by the party for the first time. Four individuals were arrested after a commotion broke out.
The Kedah results have been deemed invalid, and voting in four states – Perak, Perlis, Negri Sembilan and Malacca – has been postponed. The new dates have not yet been set.
Incumbent PKR deputy president Mohamed Azmin Ali won in Penang.
Vice-president Rafizi reiterated that Azmin had met Anwar in Turkey, seeking permission to contest the top post.
“If my claim was meant to defame Azmin, then Latheefa Koya and N. Surendran, who are lawyers close to him, would surely have filed a suit against me.
“Our friend (Azmin) did meet Anwar and asked to contest the presidency. When Anwar said he wanted to contest the top post, the matter should have been settled.
Rafizi said the plan to have Anwar in Parliament soon is a preparatory move should anything happen to Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
“Dr Mahathir is 93. Alhamdulillah, he is living a long life and is still working… but if Dr Mahathir falls sick, who is going to take over as prime minister?
“This is why the main goal is to put Anwar in Parliament soon. It is a responsible move.”
The Port Dickson seat was vacated by Danyal Balagopal Abdullah, of PKR, to pave the way for Anwar’s return to Parliament. The polls have been set for October 13. – September 23, 2018.
