Art Harun is new EC chairman

PUTRAJAYA has elected lawyer Azhar Azizan @ Harun as the new Election Commission chairman.

In a statement today, Chief Secretary to the Government Ismail Bakar said Azhar, better known as Art Harun, possesses the right experience to helm EC.

“I believe he will carry out his duties and responsibilities as EC chairman according to the federal constitution.”

Azhar replaces Mohd Hashim Abdullah, whose tenure, which was initially supposed to end in August 2020, was shortened to July 1.

The new EC chairman holds a bachelor’s degree and a master’s in law from Universiti Malaya and King’s College, University of London, respectively.

The Kedah-born Azhar, who has 31 years’ experience as a lawyer, started his career at the Allen & Gledhill firm in 1987. He then went on to work for several prominent firms.

He is also a political commentator, writing articles and hosting shows on legal matters and current affairs. – September 21, 2018.

  • Good choice. But art and ph, please go through the proper procedure for the appt. If it has to be done via parliament then please do so. Do not provide UMNO with room to raise issues.
