A CONFIDENT Anwar Ibrahim, who was convicted twice for sodomy, today told a forum that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong had always believed in his innocence.

At a fan club meeting in a hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Anwar who was the deputy prime minister until he was sacked in 1998 and later jailed for corruption and sodomy, disclosed that this was told to him by the King himself soon after his release from prison and royal pardon in May.

“I am thankful to the King because he committed justice. The King said ‘I pardoned you because I am confident that you are innocent. I had to do my duty as the king, to stop this injustice towards you since 1998’,” the PKR president-elect said.

He said he told the King, “Your Majesty, this is a very serious statement. You are now saying that the judiciary, Attorney-General’s prosecution and the investigation, were all against me, to set me up.”

The King, according to Anwar, replied, “Yes. I’m telling you the truth. If you want to, you can tell (this) tonight in your lecture,” Anwar said after launching political activist Dr Syed Husin Ali’s book.

Anwar was granted a full pardon by Sultan Muhammad V one week after the May 9th general election.

He also said he would have to work hard to win the upcoming Port Dickson by-election to ensure his return to Parliament.

“I do not take things for granted. I am not arrogant. I do not assume that Port Dickson is a natural base for PKR or Pakatan Harapan,” he said.

He said one of the challenges he would face was to explain to voters why he chose Port Dickson.

“I need to tell them, what I have to offer to PD, and why it is important to appeal to them to support and endorse my candidacy.”

Anwar also explained why he did not choose the Pandan seat for his comeback, saying that the incumbent is his wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, who is also the deputy prime minister.

“Who is going to be the deputy prime minister then? If I win, I don’t want to be the deputy prime minister. I have already told Dr Mahathir Mohamad,” he said.

“I will wait for my turn, then I take over. That is my stand. She cannot vacate the seat,” he said. – September 16, 2018.

  • Anwar realises that an able and experienced Dr. Mahathir is needed to "marshal" Malaysia's recovery from kleptocracy, abuses and excesses of the past many years..

    • Once our previous local councils (the 3rd tier of govt) are re-introduced after amendments to the Local Government Act 1976 are made, we can expect the rundown infrastructure in many of our localities to be repaired and improved, thereby eliminating corrupt practices & siphoning off of the money set aside for essential repairs. At stake here are broken (or lack of) pavements, broken and clogged drains, unlit street lights, lack of, or, bus stops in darkness, rundown playgrounds, untrimmed trees, missing drain covers, exposed manholes, etc, Malaysia never had it so bad owing to widespread corruption seen in the eyes of involved Malaysians..
