ANWAR Ibrahim has once again reiterated that he fully backs Dr Mahathir Mohamad as Malaysia’s prime minister despite rumours saying that he is planning to replace the 93-year-old as soon as possible.
Speaking at an event in Kuala Lumpur today, the former deputy prime minister, urged the public to give Dr Mahathir a chance to administer the country.
“Give Mahathir a chance to lead the country. This is our consensus in Pakatan Harapan. It is also my consensus as an individual.
“100%. I fully back him (Mahathir). For us to be strong and to be respected, we must ensure that the government is solid,” Anwar said at political activist Syed Husin Ali’s book launch.
Anwar also played down a rift between him and his former Umno superior saying that he now has a very good relationship with Dr Mahathir.
“Why do people always see the rift I had with Mahathir? I also had good moments with him. But people only see the dispute we had.
“I was asked many times, and I have said it is not easy to forgive but what is important is the people,” Anwar said.
The PKR president-elect served as Dr Mahathir’s deputy during the latter’s first stint as prime minister, before he was sacked in 1998 and subsequently imprisoned for corruption and sodomy.

Anwar was also asked about contesting in the Port Dickson by-election so soon after the May 9th general election.
He said every component party in Pakatan Harapan had agreed to the decision.
“Every party agreed to it. Why is there still noise about the decision? Come out and campaign for Pakatan Harapan,” he said.
First-time MP and former navy veteran Danyal Balagopal Abdullah vacated his seat last week, just four months after he was voted in, to make way for Anwar.
Anwar’s supporters, including his wife, Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, DAP and Amanah insist that it is high time for Anwar to return to the Dewan Rakyat. – September 16, 2018.
