PRIME Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is more “mature” now, said PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang today.
“He’s not the same… he’s now in his 90s,” said Hadi, when asked if Dr Mahathir was a friendlier man now.
“The situation has changed and Dr Mahathir’s thinking has also changed. And he has learnt from previous mistakes and we think he’s more mature now.
“That’s why he wants to pay oil royalties to Kelantan and Terengganu,” said the former Terengganu menteri besar during a press conference on the sidelines of the PAS annual congress in Kuala Terengganu, today.
He earlier told the congress that PAS was wiling to work with “everyone, including Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan”, which Dr Mahathir leads.
The government under Dr Mahathir’s first tenure as prime minister stopped paying oil royalties to Terengganu when Barisan Nasional lost the state to PAS in 1999.
Instead, the federal government diverted the payments to a federal agency. PAS has continued to use the loss of the oil royalties in its political messaging.
Throughout their long political careers, the two leaders have traded barbs with Hadi calling Umno members “kafirs”, or infidels, while Dr Mahathir has blamed Hadi for inspiring Muslim militants that had led to the Memali tragedy in 1985 that saw policemen and civilians killed.
Pressed on whether Dr Mahathir was a “nicer” man now, Hadi replied: “Yes, yes!”. – September 15, 2018.
