PAS ulama chief Mahfodz Mohamed ratcheted debate on the recent public caning of two lesbians in Terengganu by saying the punishment served as “free marketing” for the Islamic shariah administration that PAS wants to implement, reported The Star Online today.

He said following the caning, “the public was able to see that Islamic law is fair and just”.

He said “many were able to see that caning implemented by the shariah law is not harsh, and this has been praised”.

The two women, aged 22 and 32, were caned six times each in the Terengganu shariah High Court earlier this month.

“Of course, there were some who were against it, but this is the free marketing we are talking about,” he said at the opening of PAS’ ulama wing’s muktamar (general assembly) yesterday.

PAS deputy ulama chief Nik Muhammad Zawawi Salleh, at a press conference later, said the mainstream media should give PAS a chance to explain the merits of shariah law.

He said after explaining the punishment to the public, people would be free to judge the matter for themselves.

“What is happening now is that people are giving their opinion on this without listening to proper explanations,” Nik Muhammad said.

The Pasir Puteh MP said caning under civil courts was even harsher than that conducted in shariah courts, yet people tended to criticise shariah courts more. – September 14, 2018.
