PROMINENT Umno lawyer Muhammad Shafee Abdullah today arrived at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court under escort, following his arrest yesterday by MACC officers.
Shafee, is expected to be charged with two counts of money laundering in connection with a payment of RM9.5 million he received from former prime minister Najib Razak in 2013 and 2014.
Shafee, who was accompanied by half a dozen lawyers, will appear before Justice Azura Alwi .
His six lawyers are Harvinderjit Singh, Chetan Jethwani, Hasnal Rezua Merican, Sarah Abishegan, Rahmat Rezlan and Mohamad Farhan Shafee, who is his son.
Former federal court judge Gopal Sri Ram is leading the prosecution in the case against Shafee.
Anti-corruption officers picked up Shafee yesterday, following PKR president-elect Anwar Ibrahim’s statement last week that he had received an affidavit by an officer of the A-G’s Chambers claiming Shafee had received RM9.5 million from Najib in 2014.
Shafee today claimed trial to four charges under Section 4(1)(a) of the Anti-Money Laundering and Anti-Terrorism Financing Act 2001, involving two payments, totalling RM9.5 million, from then prime minister Najib Razak between 2013 and 2014.
Aside from the money laundering charges, he is also charged with tax offences after he “engaged in a transaction that involves proceeds of unlawful activity” by making an incorrect return through the omission of the RM4.3 million and RM5.2 million payments he received for the financial years 2013 and 2014, respectively.
Case management has been set for October 2. β September 13, 2018.
