POLICE and Malaysia’s internet regulator have denied that Johor royals’ social media accounts are being monitored, as claimed by Crown Prince (TMJ) Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim.
“In response to TMJ’s Facebook statement, titled ‘My Father and I Being Monitored’, I would like to clarify to the Johor palace that no such monitoring is being done,” said Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun in a statement today.
“I will seek an audience with His Majesty, the Johor sultan, to brief him on the matter.”
Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission acting chairman Mohd Ali Mohamed Nor said it did not carry out mass monitoring of social media accounts and emails.
“Any investigations into social media posts, and enforcement action, are carried out as a result of complaints or requests by law enforcement agencies,” he said in a statement today.
The two statements follow Putrajaya’s denial that it was spying on Tunku Ismail and his father, Sultan Ibrahim Sultan Iskandar.
Ali said the government “upholds the right to freedom of speech and privacy within the confines of the law”, and that MCMC would assist should there be any breaches of the law.
Tunku Ismail, in a Facebook post, said he had been informed by “officials” that his and his father’s social media pages were being monitored by certain parties using high-tech Israeli intelligence-gathering devices and cybertrooper moles.
He said the devices were used before the 14th general election as part of cyber warfare. – September 10, 2018.
