Migrants will take over if they live here long enough, says Dr Mahathir

FOREIGN workers will take over Malaysia if they are allowed to remain here long enough, said  Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

Speaking to party members on Bersatu’s second anniversary yesterday night, the party chairman warned that the Malays’ reluctance to work would allow foreigners to flood the country.

“Without them (foreign workers) our country will not be developed.

“And if they live here long and if we don’t do anything about it, then they will take over the country,” he said at the Malawati stadium in Shah Alam.

“They might also take your daughters away,” he quipped.

Dr Mahathir said the influx of foreign workers would cause the cities to become crowded so that eventually the locals would have to sell their homes and “move into the jungle”.

“Today we find many foreigners coming to work in our country. Why? Because we do not want to work.

“What the foreign workers are doing is hard work, probably dirty and dangerous (work).

“But we’re only interested in working in an air-conditioned environment. Even then productivity is low.”

He mocked locals for being quick to demand more benefits, which included high wages as well as the right to take many days of medical leave.

“They have many demands and that’s why investors don’t want them. Then they get angry and complain to the government. –  September 9, 2018.

  • All in Malaysia are migrants if you care to study the right history books. America is built by migrants who are bright and hungry. If we only keep a jaguh kampung mindset in an increasingly globalized world, what kind of a legacy will we leave to our children and their future survival. Whilst this may sound like a good political tune to sing and garner votes, it's a flawed long term strategy to base our future on. Just look at NEP over the 4 decades.

    • Peter Hong you are missing the point. This is vintage Mahathir blasting the Malays for their sense of entitlement. Only he can do it. And he has always done it. This is his way of encouraging the Malays to improve themselves and not always rely on the govt.

  • It is vital to realise that the British gave all Malayans at that time (Malays, Chinese, Indians, & minority inhabitants) Merdeka (independence) in 1957 ! The British felt that the more industrious Chinese, Indians could help with the Malays to manage the economy & build the country..

  • So then TDM thinks there is little hope for Malaysia? Less reliance on the word "God" maybe?..

  • We are already seeing rich foreigners go to Singapore and poor Singaporeans go to Iskandar/JB. Singapore persists to develop and prosper in a cosmopolitan way without an identity crisis. Anything wrong with that?

  • So what of the concerns of Johoreans who were part of a sovereign state but arm twisted into joining Malaya in 1957? Why must we endure the immigrants? We were already here before Malaysia existed. How does that make us pendatangs?
