PUTRAJAYA today announced that the minimum wage will be standardised for all of Malaysia beginning January 1 next year.
From then onwards, minimum wage in East and West Malaysia would be increased to RM1,050 a month or RM5.05 per hour, the Prime Minister’s Office said.
Currently, the minimum wage is RM1,000 a month in the peninsula, and RM920 a month in Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan.
Standardising the minimum wage for the country was one of Pakatan Harapan’s 10 pledges to be delivered in its first 100 days in government.
“After considering the recommendations of the National Wage Consultative Council, the government for the first time agrees to standardise the minimum wage for the whole country, including Sabah and Sarawak, at RM1,050 a month or RM5.05 an hour effective from January 1, 2019.
It also said the increase in the minimum wage was in line with the current economic situation, and any drastic increase in wages could cause problems in the industry and affect the nation’s competitiveness.
As such, it said it would be better to increase the minimum wage gradually over the years so that industries, especially small businesses, would not have to shut down operations due to higher costs or lay off workers.
“Employers and businesses are also urged not to increase the prices of their goods and services following the minimum wage increase.
“The Domestic Trade and Consumers Affairs Ministry has been asked to monitor prices.” β September 5, 2018.
