THE Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission has detained former intelligence chief Hasanah Abdul Hamid, a source attached to the agency told The Malaysian Insight.

It is believed that Hasanah was detained to assist in investigations into the arrest of seven administrative and diplomatic officers from the Prime Minister’s Department for allegedly misusing 14th general election funds.

“She is not going to be charged. It is to assist in investigations,” said the source.

“The investigation is not about the letter she sent to the US’ Central Intelligence Agency.”

It is understood that Hasanah will be brought to the Putrajaya magistrates’ court tomorrow morning, and a remand order against her will be sought.

Hasanah, the former head of the Malaysian External Intelligence Organisation, caused a fiasco after it was found that she had sent a letter to the CIA seeking support for former prime minister Najib Razak in the event that the 14th general election result turned out to be close.

It was reported that the seven officers, of Grades 44 to 48 Jusa B, were brought to the Putrajaya magistrates’ court at 9.05am yesterday.

An English daily said one of them was a deputy director-general in the Jusa B category, and had the “Datuk” title.

The anti-graft agency, on August 8, arrested 17 people, comprising officers and security guards from the Prime Minister’s Department, for allegedly misusing RM3.5 million allocated for use in GE14.

It was reported that Hasanah sent a letter to CIA director Gina Haspel in May, shortly before GE14.

Police, as part of the probe into 1Malaysia Development Bhd, had raided Hasanah’s home in Kuala Lumpur in search of documents allegedly handed to her by Najib before the May 9 elections.

In the letter, Hasanah allegedly accused Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who led Pakatan Harapan into GE14, as being anti-West, anti-Semitic, autocratic and using force to silence dissent, as well as having total disregard for human rights and the law. – August 28, 2018.
