THE Transport Ministry is considering plans to dispose of abandoned vehicles left along main roads and residential areas within a month.

Minister Anthony Loke said his ministry is looking at introducing a standard operating procedure (SOP) to curb this problem.

He said this after chairing the National Transportation Council (NTC) in Putrajaya today.

“We have suggested the SOP for this issue to be quickened to a period of one month, with notice of removal being served for one week before the vehicle is towed.

“The most we are looking at is the vehicle being in the compound depot for three more weeks before being scrapped,” he explained.

He said that without an SOP at present, it would take almost six months to remove these abandoned vehicles.

“We will draft the new SOP and have it presented at the next council meeting in November. Hopefully we can enforce the new guidelines by early next year,” he said.

According to Loke, abandoned vehicles are becoming a major headache, with about 15,000 of them left idling in eight major localities in Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Perak and Johor from 2014 to 2017.

He added that an integrated system was also needed to cross-check the information on abandoned vehicles.

“We need to check and verify if they are stolen, uninsured, or if the owner had defaulted payments with financial institutions,” Loke said.

The Seremban MP said that the meeting also discussed an e-hailing enforcement system and suggestions of free bus services being offered by all state governments.

“We discussed the necessity of having free bus services for all states and also on the e-hailing system.

“The ministry is also considering to introduce parking terminals for large commercial vehicles such as trailers and large lorries so they are parked in areas which are not hazardous (to the public),” he said. – August 27, 2018.

  • Yes, we support the stand by our new Transport Minister on the removal of all these abandoned vehicles. Not only they are eyesores but they took so much parking space everywhere. Actually the ministry should go one more extra step by identifying the owners and then fine them kaw kaw.

  • Yes, impose a hefty fine (no discount) on owners of abandoned cars. It will serve as deterrent to others..

  • The irresponsible owners who abandone their vehicles must be blacklisted with JPJ.They Should given 2 weeks to remove their vehicles before they are blacklisted. The cost of towing and scrap should be charged to them. There are rogues who have deliberately abondoned their vehicles near where they live.If they are not punished than more will start to abondon their old vehicles for DBKL to tow.The owners must be blacklisted and fined.

  • Can the ministry also take action against noisy motor cars and motorcycles who are a cause of noise pollution.JPJ should detain the motorcycles or motor cars who have removed their silencers
