THE government is mulling a soda tax to encourage healthy living among Malaysians, said Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

He said it was aimed at reducing sugar consumption, so as to bring down the nation’s diabetes rate.

“The diabetes rate in Malaysia is very high because we take too much sugar,” he told reporters after launching the Cities 4.0 + Business 4.0 Conference and Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur today.

He was answering a question on the soda tax being used to increase the government’s revenue.

Dr Mahathir said the government would also revive Cyberjaya, making it more focused on technology-based industries.

“We will encourage the use of Cyberjaya for this kind of industry.”

He said there could be a “second wave” of development in the Multimedia Super Corridor, driven by advances in the digital era.

On the Forest City project in Johor, he said he opposed the idea of building a city for foreigners.

“One thing is certain – the city that is going to be built cannot be sold to foreigners.

“We object to it because it was planned for foreigners, and not meant for Malaysians. Most Malaysians are unable to buy those homes (in the project).”

On the Council of Eminent Persons (CEP), Dr Mahathir hinted that there was no intention to make the CEP report public.

He said the council’s duties were to investigate matters of concern to the government and present its report to him for further action.

“Their job is to investigate. Whether I accept it is my business, but the main thing is to provide me with the information I need to make decisions.” – Bernama, August 27, 2018.

  • Then WHY does the New Malaysia govt allow NESTLE to market so much sugar packed into their green-coloured 125 ml MILO packets? Nestle is profiting from this at the expense of Malaysians' health, especially the young. Govt please take action against Nestle..
