FORMER prime minister Najib Razak’s trial would be held “tomorrow” if the world’s oldest prime minister had his way.
At his first political rally since taking over as prime minister on May 10, Dr Mahathir Mohamad was explaining to some 4,000 Kedahans in Alor Setar why the government had taken its time to bring Najib to court.
“During the election campaigns, it was easy for us to say he stole money. I have called him a thief numerous times too,” said Dr Mahathir.
But he noted that Najib had never challenged the Pakatan Harapan chairman’s allegations either.
“He was not brave enough to sue me because he stole money.
“In court, however, the charges need to be proven and documents need to be shown that he took the money and gave to others. Now, we have obtained a lot proof lately and hence he was charged in court.

He said it also seems to be taking too long and Najib is going here and there as a former prime minister with police escorts.
“We have to provide security detail for him as the former prime minister and he’s having fun going here and there. Let’s see how long he enjoys this,” he added.
Dr Mahathir said that businessman Low Taek Jho has also been charged and an Interpol red notice has been issued for the alleged 1Malaysia Development Bhd mastermind.
“He (Jho Low) is on the run now. Let’s see where he’s going to run to. He says he doesn’t trust our judiciary but we don’t trust him too as he’s a thief,” said Dr Mahathir in his home state.
He said that it will not be long before more of Najib’s accomplices are charged in court.
Dr Mahathir said he used to earn RM20,000 a month as the prime minister but some of Najib’s officers were receiving RM200,000 a month.
“Where did this money come from? It must be stolen. As such, people like that will also be charged.
“Because Najib stole money when he was PM, all those below him also stole money,” he said.
He said that this was one of the problems the new government faced in its first three months.

The PH government will begin a series of roadshows to explain to voters why they have failed to fulfill all their 100-day manifesto promises.
After Kedah, PH will continue the Jelajah Malaysia Baru roadshow in Sabah.
Also at the launch were Deputy Prime Minister Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Defence Minister Mohamad Sabu, Kedah Mentri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir, Kedah state assembly speaker Ahmad Kassim and various Kedah excos and MPs. – August 25, 2018.
