MCA will run a clean campaign in Balakong, said its candidate, Tan Chee Teong, who added he is also banking on the Election Commission to tell him if he breaches any election offences.

“My purpose in this by-election is to highlight all of Balakong’s issues. I’m a local, so I know very well what the problems are.

“If we do anything wrong, we’ll correct it. If we are right, then give us credit. Everyone wants to be clean,” Tan said after his ceramah at Sg Chua in Kajang last night.

“I don’t know about the election offences at the Sg Kandis by-election. The EC is monitoring us. If we do anything wrong, they will tell us.”

Polls watchdog Bersih 2.0 took Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional to task for violating election regulations during the Sg Kandis by-election.

In that by-election, PH’s winning candidate distributed free motorcycle engine oil, provided free medical check-ups and medicine, and canvassed for support in two public schools and three state events.

The BN candidate meanwhile provided free food and drinks at two occasions and played up ethnic and religious sentiments.

At the Balakong by-election campaign, MCA provided health screenings while PH candidate Wong Siew Ki distributed national flags to Balakong constituents on campaign trails that started on Saturday.

Voters go to the polls on September 8.

Tan also said that he welcomes PAS’ support for him in the by-election.

“I welcome anyone to support me. Regardless of party, I accept. There are PKR supporters who have said they will support me. I won’t shun DAP supporters, so why would I shun PAS supporters?” said Tan.

He visited four mosques in Taman Megah, Bandar Tun Hussein Onn, Taming Jaya, and Taman Tun Perak to celebrate Hari Raya Aidiladha.

Malays make up 30% of Balakong’s 62,219 voters.

Tan said Balakong’s most pressing issues were local – clogged drains, flash floods, and traffic.

“Dengue is scarier than cancer. It can kill in three days.

“I’m a practical person. My manifesto is about dealing with the issues here. I have given them the issues and their solutions. It’s the government’s job to address them,” said Tan.

Balakong was a MCA stronghold before the 2008 general election.

Since then, DAP has won the seat in every election. In the 14th general election on May 9, PH polled 41,768 votes in Balakong, PAS 6,230 votes, and MCA 5,874 votes.

The state seat became vacant after the death of its incumbent assemblyman, Eddie Ng Tien Chee, on July 20 in a traffic accident. – August 23, 2018.

  • Sure MCA will have a clean campaign as theyre stepping out on their own and Big Bro umno is not in power. Theyve held Balakong all these years till 2018 yet they didnt clean up the drains then, and they had the BN govt behind them then. Even without the the PH govt will clean out the snakes. Go back to slumber MCA.

  • Clogged drains, and the resulting flash floods (referred to above), will not happen when Pakatan amends the Local Govt Act to re-introduce our previous law to again have local council council elections in 2 years time. BN messed up here when they abolished local govt elections & installed corrupted cronies who didn't do their job to maintain our local infrastructure which declined in many areas thus creating inconvenience & eyesores in the local environment..
