PAS is ready to help MCA in the Balakong by-election as the Barisan Nasional component had never attacked the Islamist party on the issue of hudud, said party president Abdul Hadi Awang.
The Marang MP said the Chinese party was unlike DAP, which had “disrespected PAS” when the two parties were in the now-defunct Pakatan Rakyat coalition.
“Yes, we will help MCA in Balakong in the spirit of the opposition,” he told reporters after a PAS event n Shah Alam, Selangor.
“Both MCA and DAP are against hudud but DAP has opposed hudud since we were in Pakatan Rakyat… they didn’t respect and even attacked us despite our being in the same coalition.
“MCA was not part of the coalition; they said they didn’t agree but they didn’t attack us, unlike DAP. That’s the difference,” he said, adding that the issue of cooperation with other opposition parties needs to be further explained to the voters.
Last week, Hadi urged PAS supporters to vote for MCA candidate in the by-election as the Chinese party was now also in the opposition bloc.
The Balakong by-election on September 8 will see a straight fight between PH’s Wong Siew Ki of DAP, and MCA’s Tan Chee Teong. MCA will be using its own logo in the by-election instead of the BN “dacing” symbol.
The state seat fell vacant following the death of its assemblyman Eddie Ng Tien Chee in a road accident on July 20.
On the Seri Setia by-election, also on September 8, Hadi said he believed the cooperation between Umno and PAS would further improve.
“Sungai Kandis (by-election) was a positive start and Seri Setia will see further improvement; this can be seen from the presence of Umno leaders on nomination day,” he said.
Umno under former president Najib Razak had been at its friendliest ever with PAS. Umno also said the party would “repay” PAS in Seri Setia for the support it received from the latter in the August 4 Sungai Kandis by-election.
PAS did not contest the Sungai Kandis seat to avoid a three-cornered fight.
In Seri Setia, PAS’ Dr Halimah Ali will take on PH/PKR candidate Halimey Abu Bakar. The state seat became vacant with the death of assemblyman and Selangor executive councillor Prof Dr Shaharuddin Badaruddin (PKR) from cancer on August 2. – August 19, 2018.
