UMNO and PAS have worked together since Merdeka and the Seri Setia by-election is just the latest example of their “love-hate” relationship, said Abdul Hadi Awang.
The PAS president said in a ceramah yesterday the two parties have been together since the early days of independence and Dr Mahathir Mohamad once shared the stage with PAS at the Kapar by-election soon after the May 13, 1969 racial riots.
“We stood together with Umno when calls for independence were made in 1957. It was in Malacca, the first state in the peninsula that was occupied by foreign power. We were together demanding for freedom.
“The second time we were on the same stage was during the May 13 incident. Dr Mahathir was with us in Kapar. He spoke on our stage,” he said at the event in Lembah Subang.
Both parties had differences when it comes to Malay and Islam but the two Malay-based parties always prioritised national interests, Hadi told a crowd of 200 PAS and Umno supporters.
“When there is a huge problem, we are together on the same stage although we are different politically and ideologically,” Hadi said.

Hadi was campaigning on behalf of Dr Halimah Ali, the PAS candidate in Seri Setia. The party had earlier declined to contest the recent Sg Kandis by-election to make way for Barisan Nasional, which fielded Lokman Noor Adam from Umno.
The two former enemies have become closer after BN’s defeat at the May elections.
Hadi said cooperation is needed as many younger voters do not know the history between the two political entities.
“The young ones consider a by-election as a play thing. Not taking it seriously. They do not consider the consequences, it will cost them another five years to wait.”
Earlier, Halimah said she did not support kleptocracy nor kelengtongkrasi (lies).
The two-term former Selat Klang assemblyman urged voters to maintain a strong opposition in Selangor to keep the current Pakatan Harapan administration in check.
“No matter how good the government is, the state still needs a solid opposition to serve as a check and balance.
“Therefore, Seri Setia voters must vote for PAS for is to be a strong opposition in the state assembly.” – August 20, 2018.
