BUKIT Aman will call up its Washington-based officers to take their statements in relation to a letter sent by the former Malaysian External Intelligence Organisation (MEIO) chief to the US’ Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).
Inspector-General of Police Mohamad Fuzi Harun said “two to three” officers attached to the Malaysian embassy will be questioned.
He said police have also recorded former MEIO director-general Hasanah Abdul Hamid’s statement.
“Investigations are ongoing. We will record a few more statements soon.
“It will involved our embassy attachés in Washington. There are two to three of them.
“We have also questioned Hasanah earlier.”
Hasanah purportedly sent a letter to CIA director Gina Haspel in May, requesting the US government’s support for former prime minister Najib Razak should the 14th general election result turned out to be close.
It was reported that police, investigating the 1Malaysia Development Bhd scandal, had raided Hasanah’s home in Kuala Lumpur in search of documents allegedly handed to her by Najib before GE14.
In the letter, Hasanah allegedly accused Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who was leading Pakatan Harapan into GE14, as being anti-West, anti-Semitic, autocratic and using force to silence dissent, as well as having total disregard for human rights and the law.
Fuzi said police will also call up National Patriots Association (Patriot) president Brig-Gen (rtd) Mohamed Arshad Raji.
“Yes, we will also call him up.”
Arshad previously called for Hasanah’s arrest, saying Patriot deemed the letter “treacherous and treasonous”.
In a statement today, he said: “Only a leader and a government lacking the good qualities of leadership and good governance would stoop so low.”
He said the Najib government seemed to have pandered to both China and the US, which are engaged in conflict over the South China Sea, with the letter allegedly stating that Malaysia welcomed the US’ presence in the region.
“On the one hand, we gave tacit support for China’s dominance in the South China Sea, and on the other, covertly informed that our country was pro-US and supported American presence in the region.”
Najib has denied any knowledge of the letter. – August 14, 2018.
