FORMER prime minister Najib Razak claims he was not privy to the letter purportedly sent by a spy agency from his administration to the US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA).

Najib said the letter was written from agency to agency and he was not in the know of its contents.

“I do not know. This letter was written by our spy agency. It is not our policy to reveal those letters.

“I cannot confirm or deny it but I had no knowledge of it,” he said at the Parliament lobby today.

The former Umno president then slammed the government for setting a “bad precedent” by revealing the content of the letter which he called a “national secret”.

“This is a national secret. If we can reveal it, we can consider nothing can be the nation’s secret.

“Whether it was written or not, the policy is not to comment on leakages like this. It sets a very bad precedent,” Najib said.

He also said even if the letter were written, it did not make any difference to the election results as it was already during the campaign period when the note was supposedly sent.

“Whether they wrote the letter or not, you have to ask them, not me,” said the Pekan MP.

“And it was in a way was too late, it was during the campaign period. It will not affect the election result.”

Several days ago, copies of a letter allegedly sent by the Research Division under the Barisan Nasional administration to CIA director Gina Haspel were circulated by news outlets.

The letter, dated five days before the 14th general election, requested support for Najib’s administration in the event that the results of the election turned out to be close.

The letter was signed by the unit’s former director-general Hasanah Ab Hamid.

Earlier, Finance Minister Lim Guan Eng asked how many other similar letters were sent out to various countries, adding that the act of appealing for support from a foreign country was an affront to national sovereignty. – July 26, 2018.

  • Policies are made by government of the day. Moreover, this is no secret. Najib's idea of national secret is whatever he's trying to cover up.
