CAMPAIGNING for the PKR deputy president’s post in the coming elections has become vicious, with personal attacks putting the party in bad light, said a youth leader.
Saifudin Shafi, who is contesting for the Hulu Selangor Youth chief post, said attacks by Rafizi Ramli against the incumbent number two, Mohamed Azmin Ali, were also unfair as the latter had never put down other candidates.
“This is an archaic campaign strategy. If they want to show they are the better side, they should highlight their plans for the future,” said Saifudin over remarks by Rafizi supporters in campaign ceramah over the weekend.
The party elections, to be held next month, should be an event for PKR to showcase its vision for the country, he said.
But the personal attacks, Saifudin added , were only making the party look backward.
“PKR has already become the anchor party for the government. Furthermore, Azmin has never attacked anyone personally or put down other candidates.
“They should just focus on their manifesto,” said Saifudin, adding that his own campaign was focused on attracting young fence-sitters on the economy and education issues in Hulu Selangor.
Saifudin, who works as Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shaari’s special officer, was commenting on Rafzi’s ceramah during his roadshow in Johor, Malacca and Negri Sembilan this past weekend.
Those giving speeches had attacked not only party members supportive of Azmin but also Dr Mahathir Mohamad, the prime minister, who is said to be grooming Azmin, the economic affairs minister.
Ijok assemblyman Idris Ahmad said in Malacca last night that Dr Mahathir and Daim, who is the Council of Eminent Persons’ chairman, were “sponsoring” some PKR leaders to destroy the party from within.
He also alleged that Daim and Dr Mahathir were plotting against PKR president Anwar Ibrahim.
Kapar MP Abdullah Sani also said in a ceramah for Rafizi in Johor that Azmin enjoyed the support of Daim and Dr Mahathir, and urged PKR members to vote for Rafizi if they wanted Anwar to become prime minister.
“Rafizi’s attacks are too vicious. Nobody has done this before,” said Saifudin.
Meanwhile, another youth leader, Daeng Mohamad Reduan said that Rafizi’s attacks did not show a good example of a party that had replaced Barisan Nasional.
“PKR began from the streets, but is now one of the parties in the government. We need to change our mindset to be like a ruling party.
“The personal attacks (by Rafizi) are not in line with New Malaysia,” said the Subang PKR leader.
Voting for the PKR polls, which begin from mid-September until early October, will involve 800,000 members.
The main fight in this year’s PKR polls is between Azmin and Rafizi’s camps. Anwar became party president uncontested. – August 13, 2018.

His strategy is obvious. By becoming Deputy President he will be very close to his all time mentor, AI. He will be able to curry favours easily, and in the process hope that he be made a senator and one day assume a ministerial position.. food for thought!
