Jho Low's team again says Putrajaya seized Equanimity illegally

PUTRAJAYA’S “illegal” seizure of Equanimity has made it impossible to sell the luxury yacht at a fair price, due to still-open legal questions and repercussions for any new owner.

A spokesman for Low Taek Jho, through the businessman’s lawyers, said the US has not proven anything, but Putrajaya has made claims to the contrary.

“The truth is this: the US filed unproven allegations in a civil forfeiture complaint more than a year ago, then halted the proceedings before any party had any meaningful chance to respond.

“The allegations have ricocheted around the world for more than a year, repeated thousands of times. Thus, Mr Low has been declared guilty by the Mahathir regime before a single piece of evidence has been produced in US courts,” said the spokesman in a statement today, on behalf of the financier better known as Jho Low.

The statement comes after Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad said Malaysia has the legal documents to prove that Equanimity belongs to the country, and aims to sell the vessel as soon as possible.

“We’re going to sell the boat as soon as possible. Maintenance for this boat alone costs us RM2 million a month.

“We have to spend a lot of money to keep the boat in good shape. Shipshape, as they call it. It’s not really a boat, it’s a ship,” said Dr Mahathir after a tour of Equanimity in Port Klang.

Low’s spokesman said Dr Mahathir’s “trial by media” has made it impossible for the matter to be fairly adjudicated.

He said just a few days ago, the legal team appointed by the attorney-general had said it could take up to nine months to identify the owner of Equanimity through the Malaysian court process, but Dr Mahathir seems to be saying there will be no such process.

“Dr Mahathir has contended that the US agreed that Malaysia could keep the boat. But the US has said the opposite in court filings.

“Dr Mahathir is not complying with either US or Indonesian court rulings. He is ignoring the law solely for political purposes.”

The spokesman said Putrajaya has yet to explain why the attorney-general said the yacht’s seizure was done after “sensitive and delicate negotiations with the US” when Washington stated in court filings that it had no knowledge of the said action.

The spokesman said it is clear that Malaysia is lying and putting words in the US’ mouth.

The spokesman said repeated misstatements by Malaysia are embarrassing the US, which has said it was not involved in the seizure, and will update the US courts on August 17.

“It is clear that the Mahathir regime has no interest in a fair and just legal process. His hijacking of established and long-running legal proceedings in other countries involving those governments (such as the US) in the Equanimity matter proves this beyond any doubt.” – August 12, 2018.

  • Jho Low is obviously pissed off! As long as the yacht was out of Malaysian jurisdiction there was still a possibility that he could play the system internationally and perhaps even come out successfully. BUT unfortunately for this thief, all his options were cruelly snatched away from him when the yacht docked in Malaysian waters. Thus this prolonged online tantrum :)

  • Its not up for you to say legal or illegal, J Low. Go to court, if it finds you are still the legal owner, you take the boat and sail away. What is the point of saying its your boat and Tun took it illegally now.
