SELANGOR executive councillor Shaharuddin Badaruddin, 56, has died today after a long battle with colon cancer
His daughter Atiqah said he breathed his last at the Putrajaya Hospital at 6.28pm.
Atiqah said his remains will be taken back to Kajang after the Maghrib prayers.
In a Twitter post, Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari said Shaharuddin’s death was a great loss for the state.
“I have received the sad news that my friend has passed away. May Allah shower blessings upon his soul,” he added.
In the last general election, Shaharuddin, who is also PKR vice-president, secured the Seri Setia state seat with 29,250 votes, defeating Barisan Nasional candidate Yusoff M Haniff.
Yusoff managed to get 9,878 votes, trailed by PAS candidate Mohd Ghazali Daud (4,563 ) and Independent, S Vigneswaran (217).
Earlier this week Shaharuddin’s family had strongly denied that the assemblyman was critically ill and under intensive care in a hospital.
His senior secretary, Zafrullah Aris, said the assemblyman was resting following treatment and, according to doctor’s advice, would be on a month’s leave before returning to duty.
He added that Shaharuddin had conveyed the message to Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari.
Shaharuddin was the chairman of the Selangor Islamic Affairs, Education and Human Capital Development Committee.
Shaharuddin’s passing would result in another by-election in Selangor soon – the third following the 14th general election which brought Pakatan Harapan to federal power.
This Saturday, the Sungai Kandis by-election will take place following the death of its assemblyman Mat Shuhaimi Shafiei, also from PKR, on July 2, from lymphatic cancer.
The second by-election is due for the Balakong state constituency on Sept 8 following the death of DAP assemblyman, Ng Tien Chee, in an accident on the Grand Saga Highway on July 20. – August 2, 2018.
