PAS will campaign against its former allies in Pakatan Harapan in the Sungai Kandis by-election to ensure an even contest, said information chief Nasrudin Hassan.

Even though the Islamist party will not be fielding any candidate, the party will campaign against PH’s candidate Zawawi Ahmad Mughni and urge voters to reject him, he said.

“If PH wins, it gives the general signal that the people can accept (unfulfilled promises).

“Our stand is we want PH to lose the Sungai Kandis by-election,” he said to a protest of some 1,000 people representing 20 Malay nationalist and Muslim-rights groups in Kuala Lumpur today.

The “Kebangkitan Ummah” rally held at Kelab Sultan Sulaiman in Kampung Baru, called for the sanctity of Islam and Malay rights to be protected.

Zawawi is going up against Barisan Nasional’s Lokman Noor Adam and independent candidate Murthi Krishnasamy in the August 4 polls.

Lokman, who has been criticised for playing up race and religious sentiments, also attended today’s rally.

Other Umno and PAS leaders were also present, including Umno youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dasuki and PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan.

Rais Yatim, a former veteran Umno leader who has joined Bersatu, was also present.

Apart from Malay rights issues, speakers in the rally also brought up issues pertaining to Chinese independent schools’ Unified Examination Certificate (UEC) and the LGBT (Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) community.

Takiyuddin said the Pakatan Harapan government wouldn’t last long if no efforts were made to address people’s frustration over its governance.

“In the first 100 days, we have seen the uncertainty in the society. We hope PH government’s tenure will be the shortest, we will move towards that.

“The people can elect the government and they can also bring down a government,” he said.

Takiyuddin also expressed his disappointment over attitudes of several government lawmakers whom he said openly challenged the supremacy of the Malay rulers and Malay language.

“There are some irresponsible statements made by leaders from the other side that challenge the sovereignty of the Malay rulers, saying this land is not a Malay land but a Malaysia land instead.

“This was mentioned in Parliament. Malay language is no longer given the proper position,” he said. – July 28, 2018.

  • Until the Kajang move after GE13, PAS was in the driving seat of power. involved with decision making for the country. If they had only adhered to the basic fundamental ethics of friendship and comradeship for a cause, today with PH they would be deciding what is good for the nation. They were in opposition yesterday, today and will be be so forever. All their false alarm about race, religion is like a broken broken gramaphone record

  • Have PAS & UMNO heard of the future Industrial Revolution (No.4) & how a good command of English will enable Malaysians to get better paying jobs overseas if our local job market were to contract when jobs are lost to robots & artificial intelligence?..
