RAIS Yatim has warned the Pakatan Harapan government to yield to the demands of the majority and to backtrack on its plans to recognise the Chinese-independent schools’ Unified Examination Certificate (UEC), or face backlash from Malay-rights groups.

Rais, a former veteran Umno leader who joined Bersatu prior to the May 9 general election, was addressing a protest of about 1,000 supporters of several Malay nationalist and Muslim rights groups in Kuala Lumpur today.

“UEC is a question of sovereignty, it’s a question of race, nationhood and nationality, it’s not a small issue.

“What the voice of the majority is saying, is we don’t want. Study first, we need to look into it before UEC was made a manifesto.

“UEC is placed as promise number 50,” Rais said in his speech this morning.

He said the pledge to recognise UEC along with the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) certification should not be given equal importance with other promises in the manifesto such as lowering the price of fuel and goods, and abolishing toll charges.

This morning’s demonstration, which grouped together 20 Malay and Muslim-rights non-government organisations, was also attended by PAS and Umno leaders.

Rais also said that in setting up Vision 2020, Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had also stated his intentions to strengthen the use of Bahasa Melayu.

“Dr Mahathir must remember Vision 2020, where one of the goals is to build up a singular education and knowledge system which leads to a society that loves and cares for each other.

“This UEC issue will not see an end to the discontent,” he said.

In its pre-election manifesto, PH pledged to recognise the standardised test for Chinese independent high school students for entry into public universities.

For the UEC, all non-language subjects are tested in the Chinese language, as opposed to government standardised exams conducted in Bahasa.

Currently, local public universities do not recognise the UEC results for their entry requirements, although local private higher learning institutions and several other foreign universities do. – July 28, 2018.

  • Didn't BN also promise to recognise UEC if the people voted them in? I distinctly remember a video of Najib making such a promise.

  • Rais Yatim should not spewing nonsense. UEC does not threaten the country's sovereignty. Does Rais even know what sovereignty mean? And how does Rais know that the majority are against recognising the UEC? Has he conducted a referendum? Do the people at his rally represent the majority. Promises are promises: you keep them. Both Pakatan Harapan and BN had the UEC recognition in their manifesto. Rais is suggesting that the PH Government breaks its promise. It really reflects on his character or lack thereof.

  • Thank You Rais Yatim for exposing your trueself. Showing your fangs now was a reflection of PH in their good foresight and the call of not recommending you as a Dewan Speaker. This may have infuriated you to be extra ordinarily critical of PH. Imagine what level of chaos and prejudiced decisions being made by you in the parliament. Since the days of Ku Li and after that Anwar you have been a true bred racist but hides it well due to the official designation in the Government. Once in a while it shows up as you cannot contain it when the emotions are just waiting to erupt. Right now you are just being yourself as a racist and without a damn care for there is nothing in line for you anymore. Joining Bersatu on the last few defining days was a desperate attempt and insincere loyalty but all in the guise to revive your failing status.Well it did not go unnotice by the old man whom I believe have yet to trust you at all since Semangat 46. Now when all have slip through your fingers lost you go for broke by the planned actions of banding together with all the devl disciples in scratching out venoms of bigotries and racial hatred to create mayhem hopefully to place the country into a state of anarchial disorder. This is a seriou offence and warrants for a seditiou charge on you to be hauled up and silent into the penitentiary. You have overplayed your pedestrian capabilities and forget not you do have loaded baggages which are yet to be opened up.

  • This Rais Yatim guy is a big trouble maker with twisted forked tongue. He's like the thorn in the flesh. He's a hardcore racist and a traitor as well. He was a loyal umno guy who just left the party joining PPMB. Now he's warning the Goverment. Who the hell is he to warn the government of today when he was just like a parrot during najib Bn ruling? He tried so hard to become the speaker for the parliament but luckily he was rejected by PH. Now he's cunningly instigating the Malay movements to go against the PH government on the UEC issue. He's sly worst than a fox.

  • The argument that 'all non-language subjects are tested in the Chinese language' actually places UEC on a higher level because China is one of the five permanent members of UN, while Bahasa and Malays are not. The number of Malay pupils in SRK(C), is a testimony that the Chinese language qualification is in demand and worth more than BM for employment in the private sector. Give the Malays a combination of right subject so that they can compete as equals. Graduates selling nasi-lemah is not a good sign of a U education.

  • RAIS, the backlash from ketuanan sentiment after 60 years was felt and is real. Tun D M and the progressive Malays must have felt it and want to change badly. Why do you want to prolong it?
