TENGKU Razaleigh Hamzah is the chairman of Umno’s newly formed council of advisers, said Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The Umno president said the Gua Musang MP has been empowered to appoint and determine who sits on the council.
“The Supreme Council has decided to form a council of advisers to be chaired by Tengku Razaleigh. It will be among nine councils to be formed by the party,” he told a press conference after the Supreme Council meeting.
He also said the councils had various responsibilities aimed at empowering Umno as a political party in line with Article 3 of its constitution, which covers Malay culture and the position of Bahasa Malaysia.
Zahid said that eight task forces and 10 secretariats would be set up to address public policies.
In the recent party election, Zahid defeated Tengku Razaleigh and the party’s former youth chief, Khairy Jamaluddin, in the contest for the party’s top post.
Zahid had offered them positions in the party, but the Rembau MP had elected to stay out of the party’s leadership.
However, Zahid had said on Wednesday he had met with Tengku Razaleigh and offered him a role to play in the party.
Zahid said Umno would also lower its membership age to 16.
“To fulfil the desires of the grassroots and to ensure we reform Umno’s organisational structure, constitution, and rules, we have decided to lower the membership age from the present 18 years to 16,” he said.
He said this will be a logical move if Putrajaya goes ahead with its plan to allow those aged 18 to register as voters.
Zahid this was also keeping with the international norm which generally recognised those aged 15 as youth.
“Youths are defined as 15 years of age internationally. We have decided to wait until they are 16, but this move is to ensure we are ready for what the future brings,” he said.
The Bagan Datuk MP said the party will revise its rolls and remove those who have left it or those who had died.
Following the May 9 general election, many leaders and party members left the party to join parties in the Pakatan Harapan pact.
Zahid said this year’s general assembly will be held on September 30 with the wings kicking off their respective meetings on September 29. – July 27, 2018.
