Malaysia has highest diabetes rate in Asia

MALAYSIA has the highest rate of diabetes in Asia and one of the highest worldwide, said National Diabetes Institute executive chairman Dr Mustaffa Embong.

He said there are some 2.5 million adults – those aged 18 and above – with diabetes in the country.

“Statistics suggest that almost half of Malaysians do not know they have diabetes.

“Most of the time, Type 2 diabetes does not have symptoms… until you develop a heart attack, stroke, kidney failure or blindness. It can also lead to amputations,” he said at the 10th Diabetes Complications Conference and Grand Rounds in Kuching today.

He said diabetes is one of several diseases dubbed “silent killers”.

“Various topics, including new treatments for diabetics, will be presented during the conference.”

A total of 11 diabetologists from the US, the UK, Australia, Europe and Asia will speak at the two-day conference. – Bernama, July 24, 2018.

  • OBESITY can contribute to diabetes, which can then proceed to kidney failure, etc? So what is the Pakatan govt going to do about it? EXISTING GUIDELINES ARE NOT ENOUGH, & MUST BE REVAMPED FOR BOTH OBESITY & DIABETES! M'sian Insight must get the Health Minister to reply & publish his comment..
