PAKATAN Harapan and PKR’s election machineries for the Sungai Kandis by-election must be prepared to counter racial and religious polemics that will be stirred up by BN’s candidate, said Selangor Menteri Besar Amirudin Shari.
The Sungai Tua assemblyman said party members must work to prevent such narratives from swaying Sungai Kandis voters.
“That’s why when we go to the ground to meet voters, we need to tell them that religious issues, slander, non-existent issues and political propaganda will be used to provoke us,” he said at the launch of Pakatan Harapan’s operations room for the Sungai Kandis by-election in Bukit Kemuning today.
He also said that party members should not be complacent in defending the Sungai Kandis seat, which was held by its previous assemblyman Shuhaimie Shafiei for three terms.
Shuhaimi died of cancer on July 2, sparking the by-election.
PKR is fielding tahfiz school principal Zawawi Ahmad Mughni, who will go up against Umno firebrand Lokman and independent K. Murthy, a retired civil servant.
“There are people who say that the opposition should be given a chance to be a strong voice in the state assembly because they only have five reps left.
“If we pity other candidates, we will give the wrong signal on the reform process we are experiencing right now,” he said.
This is the first by-election following the general election on May 9. Polling is on August 4. β July 22, 2018.
