THE unexpected entry of retired civil servant Murthy Krishnasamy has turned the Sungai Kandis by-election into a three-cornered fight.
The media-shy 60-year-old arrived at the MBSA hall in Shah Alam this morning unannounced and without any supporters, to file his nomination papers after the two frontrunners from Barisan Nasional and PKR had filed theirs.
Barisan Nasional is fielding Umno’s Lokman Adam and PKR’s candidate is religious teacher Zawawi Ahmad Mughni.
Interviewed later, Murthy said he just wanted to be in the Selangor assembly as a independent voice.
He wanted to “repay” Selangor, where he had worked all his life as a civil servant.
“I want to pay back Selangor as an independent voice,” said Murthy, after nominations closed.
He declined to give more details on why he had decided to contest as an independent. Instead, he preferred to ask the journalists if they knew how Malaysia came by its name.
When pressed on what issues he would bring up if he was elected, Murthy said he would represent all Malaysians.
Returning Officer Ahmad Zaharin Mohd Saad, who is the Shah Alam mayor, officially announced Murthy, Lokman and Zawawi as the three by-election candidates.
This is the first by-election following the general election on May 9.
In the general election, PKR’s Shuhaimie Shafiei polled 23,998 votes to win with a majority of 12,480 votes. BN’s Kamaruzzaman received 11,518 votes while PAS’ Mohd Yusof Abdullah had 7,573 votes. PSM’s Hanafiah Husin mustered only 76 of the 50,800 votes.
The seat fell vacant upon Shuhaimie’s death on July 2. – July 21, 2018.
