TALKS about a Malay tsunami by the opposition is just a tactic to scare Chinese voters, an MCA Youth leader was reported as saying by The Star.

Chong Sin Woon said the claim was to frighten the Chinese into voting for the opposition, since they believe unhappy Malay voters would do the same.

“The opposition is actually worried that more Chinese are supporting Barisan Nasional.

“This was evident in the Sungai Besar and Kuala Kangsar by-elections as well as surveys conducted by both MCA and DAP,” he said.

Chong, who is deputy education minister, said for the last two years, surveys by MCA showed an average 35% of Chinese voters supporting BN – an increase from 2013’s percentage of between 15% and 20%.

He said BN and MCA would perform better in the next elections with more Chinese support.

He said DAP was aware of this from its surveys and was worried.

Chong also attributed the drop in support to the loss of DAP’s national chairman Karpal Singh, who died in a 2014 car crash, and the disappointment of Chinese voters after they gave the opposition support for two terms.

“With Karpal’s passing, DAP compromised its values and was prepared to work with people like Dr Mahathir Mohamad, and this has also upset many,” he said, adding that some opposition elected reps were also hardly seen on the ground. – July 18, 2017.
