“EMBARRASSING” is how Khairy Jamaluddin describes former attorney-general Mohamed Apandi Ali’s U-turn on accepting a top Umno post.

The latest criticism by an Umno man of the party’s new leadership comes as Umno attempts to fashion itself into a credible opposition after losing federal power for the first time since Merdeka.

Khairy, who is former Umno Youth chief, questioned whether the episode would damage the Malay party’s ability to lead the parliamentary opposition when the new session starts tomorrow.

“The initial appointment was disappointing. This is now just embarrassing,” the Rembau MP said on Twitter last night.

“We need to be a credible opposition. This is just amateur hour.”

Apandi had initially accepted his appointment to the Supreme Council yesterday, calling it “an honour”, and saying he would help in efforts to rejuvenate the party.

But mere hours later, he turned down the appointment, saying it would be “inappropriate” for him to accept it.

Apandi said he fears the appointment would cast negative perceptions linked to his actions as attorney-general during the Najib Razak administration.

Among the political leaders who criticised his appointment to the Supreme Council was Kedah Umno Youth chief Hazizy Zainol Abidin, who said it was a “political mistake” due to Apandi having been implicated in past scandals. – July 15, 2018.

    • We do not need racist UMNO's cybertroopers demeaning the very race they are supposed to champion. If Apandi has any dignity left in him, he should have faded into the sun set instead of rejoining BUMNO.
